TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT (TKR)

Under certain circumstances - e.g. for elderly or very inactive people, for extremely malformed joints - it may be more desirable to replace the joint with an artificial one rather than trying to repair the damage. Sometimes only part of the joint needs to be replaced, sometimes the entire joint. This procedure usually only comes into play when other "self healing" methods such as abrasion have failed.

By replacing the worn cartilage surfaces with metal and/or plastic, pain is more or less completely alleviated, and the joint can handle every-day load again. The component can either be "press-fitted" or fastened by so-called bone cement.

MIS -QUAD SPARING TOTAL KNEE ARTHROPLASTY (TKA)

People with knee pain now have a minimally invasive alternative to traditional total knee replacement – also known as total knee arthroplasty (TKA)

Using modified techniques and instruments surgeons can place the same, clinically proven implants used in traditional surgery, but through a much smaller incision and without cutting through key tendons and muscles. In traditional surgery, the surgeon makes a 12-inch incision down the front of the knee and the tendon and quadriceps muscle – which control the bending of the knee – are cut. In MIS Quad-Sparing TKA, a 3- to 5-inch incision is made on the side of the knee, and the tendon and “quad” muscle are separated, rather than cut.

Compared to standard surgery, potential benefits of MIS Quad-Sparing TKA include:

• Smaller incision – 3 to 5 inches vs. 12 inches
• Shorter total rehabilitation
• Less blood loss

TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT

Hip replacement is usually considered once other therapies, such as pain medications, have failed. Most people undergo hip replacement as a result of osteoarthritis of the hip joint. But you might also consider hip replacement if you experience severe pain, loss of motion or deformity of your hip joint.

Hip replacement is also used in people with hip injuries, rheumatoid arthritis and other medical conditions, such as a bone tumor or bone loss due to insufficient blood supply (avascular necrosis).

Hip replacement surgery involves replacing the femoral head — the "ball" of your thighbone — with a metal ball. The metal ball attaches to a metal stem that fits into your thighbone.

A plastic and metal socket is implanted into your pelvic bone to replace the damaged socket. The prosthetic parts, which mimic the natural design of your hip, fit together and function like a normal hip joint.

Artificial hip joints come in many varieties. Materials used in making the prostheses include a combination of durable, wear-resistant plastic and metals, including stainless steel and titanium. Implants are biocompatible — meaning they're designed to be accepted by your body — and they're made to resist corrosion, degradation and wear.

HIP RESURFACING/BIRMINGHAM HIP

Hip Resurfacing (Birmingham Hip) provides younger, more active patients with an alternative choice of treatment for degenerative hip disease. It offers significant advantages compared to conventional Total Hip Replacement – the implant should last longer and is more stable – allowing a return to a more normal lifestyle for those patients who wish to remain active.

The procedure is very bone conserving, since the head of the femur is simply reshaped and “resurfaced”, rather then being removed. Should the device need replacing at some time in the future, this may provide better options for the Surgeon at that time, as a conventional Total Hip Replacement can then be used.
